Types of Visas

Study Permit: Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada.
The study permit is a document we issue that allows foreign nationals to study at Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) in Canada (You should apply before you travel to Canada.)

Note: Your Study Permit is not a Student visa.

Temporary Resident Visa (IMM 5256)

A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), also referred to as a visitor visa, is an official document issued by a Canadian visa office that is placed in your passport to show that you have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident (either as a visitor, a student, or a worker).

There are two types of Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) you could get :
How long can you stay in Canada with a study permit?
A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, plus an extra 90 days. This extra time lets you prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay.

1. A single-entry visa: Allows you to enter Canada only once during its validity. When you leave Canada, excluding travel to the United States and St. Pierre and Miquelon, you will need to obtain a new TRV to re-enter Canada.
2. A multiple-entry visa: Allows you to re-enter Canada repeatedly during its validity. You must arrive in Canada on or before the expiry of your TRV.
eTa Information
An eTA is an electronically stored authorisation for travel to Canada.
You can enter Canada as many times as you want to the duration of 5 years from the date your eTA is granted, or until the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first. It is an automated online requirement which involves completing an obligatory form for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by aeroplane.

Applying for family members (IMM-5257E):

Canada’s generous immigration policy allows certain family members of international students to come to Canada to work and/or study. Full-time students with a valid study permit can help their spouse or common-law partner apply for an open work permit. An open work permit will enable the spouse or common-law partner of the international student to work and is usually valid for the entire length of the student's study permit. To be eligible for this program, the student must be studying full-time, and have a valid study permit.

Note: If you are applying for more than 6 months you required to prior Medicals.
Part-time Jobs: With a valid Canadian Study Permit, an international student may be eligible to work for an employer outside the campus of the educational institution where he or she is registered. Once eligible for off-campus work, international students may work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions, and full-time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or spring break.

  • Valid original Passport and Passport-size photographs
  • Proof of acceptance from Educational Institutes/ Universities/ Unconditional letter of acceptance
  • Fees receipt/ Scholarship letter (if applicable)
  • Financial documents/Financial documents (Student required funds minimum of 10,000 Canadian dollars per year)
  • Academic documents
  • Test scores/ English Language Proficiency Exam Score
  • Work experience certificates (if applicable)
  • Medical report (Immigration Medical Examination (IME)
