Types of Visas
  • F1 Student Visa:
    Students who are intended to study full time (more than 18 hours of study per week) equivalent degree and above you need F1 student visa.
    Note: For Spouse and children required to apply for F2/M2 visa (In US F2/M2 category visa holder not able to work).
  • The J1 Visa (J1 Exchange visitor visa):
    J1 visa is usually sought by working professional who goes to America on an exchange program such as visiting scholars or lecturers pursuing exchange programs and students on sort term study programmes. (These may include a 10-month vocational training or some research fellowship, etc.)
  • M1 Visa:
    This category student visa reserved for vocational and technical schools. The process is like F1 but in this student can stay only given (duration of visa) period.
  • Extension:
    For students studying STEM courses (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) allows a 24-month extension.
Working on Student Visa
  • Students are allowed to work 20 hours per week in the first year of their studies within the campus or campus related jobs (please find more information regarding part-time jobs with above web links).
  • During the vacation (off term) students are allowed to work full time (40 hours more per week).
  • Post Study Work Permit in the US: F1 category students are able to complete up to a year of temporary employment directly related to the major field of study.
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT): Students can stay back and work after their studies for one year. (Students can able to use OPT in two different ways one is Pre-completion OPT and Post-completion OTP)
Documents Required for Student Admission
  • Applicants Passport
  • Credentials/ certificates and transcript of records. Admission test scores, such as the SAT or the ACT (official translations required).
  • A Personal Statement/ Statement of purpose (SoP)/Research Proposals for Research and PhD programmes.
  • Scores from tests, such as the IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, GRE or GMAT
  • Academic and employment references (where it required)
  • Student Portfolio/CV
Documents Required for F1 Student Visa
  • Academic Records/Qualifications (credentials)
  • Passport and Passport-size photographs
  • I-20 (Confirmation of Acceptance Letter from Educational Institutions)
  • Ds-160 Application
  • Interview appointment
  • Fee (Visa fee) payment receipt
  • Bank Statements/Financial evidence (Bank statements from last 3 years and if you are working payslips and related bank statements, certified accountant letter to confirming your financial resources, if it is Bank loan you need a letter from Bank to confirming your loan)

    Important U.S. Government Agencies/Departments

  • DoS (Department of State): Issues visas at U.S. embassies and consulates.
  • DHS (The Department of Homeland Security): Oversees ICE and CBP.
  • CBP (Customs and Border Protection): Responsible for border protection; inspectors at the port of entry.
  • SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System): Online student tracking system. U.S. Institutions use the SEVIS system to issue the form I-20 for students.
