Types of Visa
  • Type ‘C’ visa – for short courses (summer schools, language schools) up to three months only (After 90 days still if you want to study further, you must apply for an e residence document)
  • Type ‘D’ visa –for courses that last longer than three months (90 days) and more (initially valid for 1 year)
    Note: Malta is a member of the Schengen Area, even though students from within in the EU, EEA or Switzerland need a visa to study in Malta for more than three months (90days). From Non-EU students required a visa regardless of the duration of their stay.
    - Students who wish to study full time from non-EU countries must apply for a residence permit, which allows them to reside in Malta for the duration of their studies and travel throughout the Schengen area.
    - Non-EU students pursuing a full-time course (exceeding 90 calendar days) leading to a higher education qualification may take up employment for a maximum of 20 hours per week, starting from their first year of studies. Moreover, students who obtain a recognised higher education qualification in Malta may extend their stay in Malta by six months.
    - Language course and ‘Malta Qualifications Framework’ Level 1 to 4 students are allowed to work for 20 hours.
    - Maintenance funds: All students must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to maintain themselves for the duration of their entire studies in Malta. Minimum one year's tuition fees plus approximately €48 euro per day (€17,520 a year), which is calculated to be sufficient for one academic year's accommodation and living expenses.
    - Maltese and English are the official languages of the country, but courses at the University of Malta are in English. For visa, there are no compulsory language requirements, whereas to get into good universities/insinuations they may require English fluency. (Here the universities accept TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge English test).
    - Spouses and children under 18 years can apply for a visa along with the main applicant, but a spouse may not allow work directly if they want to work, they need to apply license (work permit) separately.
    - EU/EEA member state students are entitled to free treatment at Malta’s state-funded hospitals and health centres on the production of an EHIC card. Non-EU/EEA member state students are entitled to these services only in cases of emergency (compulsorily requirement of Health Insurance for every student from No-EU for the entire length of their stay in Malta).
