Types of Visa
- Fee-Paying Student Visa: If you’re from overseas, you can apply for a visa to study full-time in New Zealand. You’ll need to pay the full cost of your courses and enrol with an approved education provider.
- Study full-time at the course stated on your visa – this includes schools, tertiary (study after secondary school) and English language study. Your Student Visa is normally for the same length of time as the study you’ve paid for.
- Work part-time up to 20 hours a week while studying or full-time in the holidays, depending on your visa conditions.
- If you want to bring your partner or children with you, they can apply for visas based on their relationship to you.
Spouses of the student on Work Visa can work full time in New Zealand. - Exchange Student Visa: If you’re outside New Zealand and have been accepted into an approved student exchange scheme, you can study full-time in New Zealand.
- Study full-time in New Zealand in a school-to-school exchange, an exchange programme organisation scheme or a tertiary exchange. Up to 4 years depending on the length of your exchange.
- Student exchange schemes may include school-to-school (or sister school exchanges), exchanges organised by exchange programme organisations and tertiary exchanges
- Work part-time up to 20 hours a week while studying or full-time in the holidays, depending on your age and how long your study is for.
- Foreign Government Supported Student Visa: If you have a foreign government loan or scholarship, you can study full-time in New Zealand for more than 3 months. To apply, you'll need to provide evidence your tuition fees will be paid by the loan or scholarship.
- Study full-time at the course stated on your visa – this includes schools, tertiary (study after secondary school) and English language study. This category up to 4 years. You can only apply for this visa if the country supporting your study has an education agreement with New Zealand.
- Work part-time up to 20 hours a week while studying and full-time in the holidays, depending on your visa conditions.
- If you want to bring your partner or children with you, they can apply for visas based on their relationship to you.
- New Zealand Aid Student Visa: You can study full-time in New Zealand. You must be funded by the New Zealand Government under certain schemes.
- Study full-time at the course stated on your visa – this includes schools, tertiary (study after secondary school) and English language study. This category up to 4 years.
- Work part-time up to 20 hours a week while studying and full-time in the holidays, depending on your New Zealand Aid Programme scheme.
- You can't include your partner and dependent children in your application for a New Zealand Aid Student Visa, but they can apply for their own visas based on their relationship to you.
- Depending on your scholarship programme, your partner may be eligible for a work visa for the length of your New Zealand Aid Programme scholarship.
- Your dependent children will be eligible for student visas.
- Pathway Student Visa: You can apply to study up to 3 consecutive courses on a single student visa in New Zealand. You’ll need to have a Pathway Student Visa offer of a place with a Pathway education provider and be able to pay your tuition fees
- Study up to 3 courses, one after the other, on a single student visa. For up to 5 years. You’ll need to meet the pre-requisites for any second and third courses on your study pathway to stay in New Zealand on a Pathway Student Visa.
- Work part-time up to 20 hours a week while studying and full-time in the holidays, depending on your course of study.
- You can't include your partner or dependent children in a student visa application, but they can apply for their own visas based on their relationship to you.
Note: If the students want to apply for the course duration below 3 months you need to apply visitors visa only.

- Academic documents till date/ Evidence of prior study (official academic transcript and other credentials)-(Some of the institutes accept certified digital transcripts from My eQuals and CHESSIC)
- Work Experience (If any)
- You must provide all your education and other documents should be original language version and the English translation.
- English Language Requirements: New Zealand Immigration does not set any English language requirements for international students, but some Education Providers require a certain level of English before offering you a place, but this will vary from one provider to the other and you will have to find this out individually. Whereas to get admission this basic guideline helps you to get admission.
- For Level 3 qualification–
- IELTS (Academic/General) Overall score 5.0 and in all modules minimum 5.0 band
- TOEFL pBT: score of 500 with any essay of 4 TWE
- TOEFL iBT : Score of 35 with a writing score of 20
- PTE/PToE (Academic): Score required 36 - For Level 4 qualification-
- IELTS (Academic/General) Overall score 5.5 and in all modules minimum 5.0 band
- TOEFL pBT: score of 530 with any essay of 4.5 TWE
- TOEFL iBT : Score of 46 with a writing score of 20
- PTE/PToE (Academic): Score required 42 - For Level 5 qualification
- IELTS (Academic/General) Overall score 5.5 and in all modules minimum 5.0 band
- TOEFL pBT: score of 550 with any essay of 5 TWE
- TOEFL iBT : Score of 46 with a writing score of 20
- PTE/PToE (Academic): Score required 42 - For Level 6 qualification (Graduation level)-
- IELTS (Academic/General) Overall score 6.0 and in all modules minimum 5.5 band
- TOEFL pBT: score of 550 with any essay of 5 TWE
- TOEFL iBT : Score of 60 with a writing score of 20
- PTE/PToE (Academic): Score required 50 - For Level 7/8 qualification (Post Graduation/Doctoral level)-
- IELTS (Academic/General) Overall score 6.6 and in all modules minimum 6.0 band
- TOEFL pBT: score of 590 with any essay of 5.5 TWE
- TOEFL iBT : Score of 79 with a writing score of 21
- PTE/PToE (Academic): Score required 58 - Statement of purpose
- Academic references
- Evidence of intended study- For International student must provide Evidence of your intended study for admission application.
Documents Required for Student Visa
- Valid Passport(s)/Birth certificate/National identity card (identity)
- Visa Application (appropriate category from)
- Academic Records/Qualifications (credentials)
- Passport-size photographs
- Offer letter from the College or University/ An unconditional offer letter
- English fluency
- Value of your chosen course to your future
- Fee (Visa fee) payment receipt
- Police Clearance Certificate: All international student applicants who are above the age of 17 years and intend to stay in New Zealand for a total of more than 24 months must provide their Police Clearance Certificate. It must be less than 6 months old at the time of your visa application submission time.
- Financial documents:
You must have enough money held in New Zealand to support yourself for the full length of your studies or visa duration. Evidence of enough funds for maintenance, via a sponsor letter or bank statement, or completed Financial Undertaking form (INZ 1014)
(For your financial evidence it is required to Proof of funds should include wages slips and corresponding bank statements for at least the last six months)
- Health insurance:
For the full length of your study/visa need health insurance (Travel insurance is always suggestible) - Health requirements:
- Student who are intended to apply their stay of duration between 6 to 12 months they must get ‘TB screening X-ray’, it should be no longer than 3 months old at the date of submission (Required fully completed Temporary Entry X-ray Certificate form, NZIS 1096 and if there are any medical issues they must submit complete medical reports)
- If students intended to apply 12 months and more, they must undergo complete medical test and TB X-ray examination, it should be no longer than 3 months old at the date of submission (Required fully completed Temporary Entry X-ray Certificate form, NZIS 1007 and associated medical reports)
- Medical exemption for people who are pregnant or under 11 years of age
- Guarantee of accommodation
